SERVER AND STORAGE TEAM LEAD

POSITION SUMMARY: The Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) of the University of Rochester is a unique national resource for research and education in science and technology focusing on using lasers to initiate fusion and high energy density physicts. LLE is currently seeking an experienced Server and Storage Team Lead. The successful candidate will be responsible to lead the server and storage engineering team in designing, deploying and supporting servers and storage services for LLE research, operations, engineering, and administration. They will report to the IT Infrastructure and Operations Section Leader. Duties include day-to-day system engineering, monitoring overall system health, usage and capacity, performing system maintenance tasks, evaluating new hardware, and general troubleshooting for any issues that may arise. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Establish strategy, architecture, design and support LLE IT server and storage system infrastructure
  • Lead the LLE server and storage team performing architecture, design, build, test, and maintenance
  • Evaluate the potential impacts of new servers and storage solutions in the environment
  • Measure and monitor overall system performance, usage, availability, capacity and health
  • Provide support for capacity monitoring and management
  • Interact with users to understand their computational and storage capacity needs

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS in IT, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent skills work experience. Advanced degree is a plus.
  • Excellent technical, analytical & communication skills
  • 5+ years of hands-on Linux experience and infrastructure support (networking, storage, backups, monitoring). Red Hat Linux and other certifications are a plus
  • Expertise Linux and Windows server operating systems, virtualization architecture, and multi-tier, resilient storage file systems, architecture, and design
  • Experience designing and implementing data center server and storage networking solutions
  • Expertise in storage connection and data sharing with Linux and Windows workstations SAMBA, SMB/CIFS)

SENIOR MECHANICAL ENGINEERING ANALYST

POSITION SUMMARY: The successful candidate will be challenged by a wide range of technologies employed on the fusion class OMEGA and OMEGA EP laser systems and also potential collaborations with National Laboratories. These laser systems often demand designs that are high-precision, high-stability, and function in a class 100 cleanroom at either air or at vacuum. Design areas include laser system components scientific diagnostic instruments, vacuum systems, cryogenic systems, and more. The successful candidate must have a minimum of an MSME or BSME with equivalent years of experience in mechanical engineering is required. A minimum of 10 years of mechanical design experience is required.

The job requires creative design, experimental and analytical approaches in applied research projects. The candidate must be able to work independently as well as function in a team environment interacting with leading fusion energy, nuclear, and plasma physics scientists.

Essential experience for this position includes:

  • Demonstrated theoretical and hands-on knowledge with both linear and non-linear computed aided engineering techniques in the areas of solid mechanics, heat transfer and vibration

ELECTRO-MECHANICAL TECHNICIAN

POSITION SUMMARY: The Laboratory for Laser Energetics has an opening for an experienced mechanical, electrical, and/or vacuum systems technician within the laboratory's Cryogenic and Tritium Facility. The position entails the operation and maintenance of complex mechanical systems used to characterize, manipulate, transport and position cryogenic fuel pellets for LLE's Inertial Confinement Fusion research program.

REQUIREMENTS:

COMPUTATIONAL/THEORETICAL PLASMA PHYSICIST (RESEARCH ASSOCIATE)

The Theoretical Division seeks a computational/theoretical plasma physicist at the Research Associate level to conduct research in the areas of short and long pulse laser-plasma interactions. Experience running and programming simulations such as particle-in-cell (PIC) or Vlasov/Fokker-Planck would be an asset, as would experience in the interpretation or design of relevant experiments. In addition to an excellent understanding of laser-plasma physics, the successful candidate should have good interpersonal skills, a willingness to work in a team, and the ability to communicate well in writing. A Ph.D. in physics or a closely related area is required. Research associates are typically recent Ph.D. graduates that have demonstrated expertise by publishing their graduate research in peer-reviewed journals.
