General Atomics
Postdoctoral Research Associate Position in the field of Experimental High Intensity Laser Plasma Interactions

General Atomics is searching for an experimental Postdoctoral Research Associate in the area of high intensity laser-matter interactions. The GA group is currently examining the fast ignition concept of inertial confinement fusion in multiple collaborations at cutting-edge laser facilities around the world. The research involves the study of both fuel assembly from a highly asymmetric target into a homogenous plasma, and the propagation of energy into such dense, hot plasmas. The successful candidate will be part of the newly funded DOE/OFES Fusion Science Center (FSC). Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Plasma Physics. Interested candidates should apply via our website http://www.ga.com/. Click on the GA Career Center link and refer to keyword "2522" when applying for this position. ADA/EOE

University of California, San Diego
Postdoctoral Research Associate Position in the field of Experimental High Intensity Laser Plasma Interactions

The University of California, San Diego invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate Position to start in the fall of 2004. The UCSD group is currently active in examining the fast ignition concept of inertial confinement fusion. The research involves study of propagation and deposition of energy in solid targets/compressed fuel by the energetic charged particles produced in the short pulse high intensity laser plasma interactions. We seek candidates who have a primary interest in exploiting the physics potential of Fast Ignition Scheme. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Plasma Physics. Interested candidates should send a curriculum vitae and arrange to have three letters of recommendations sent to: Dr. Farhat Beg, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University of California, San Diego, 9500 Gilman Drive, La Jolla, California 92093-0411. E mail: fbeg@ucsd.edu. For more information about our activities, see http://maemail.ucsd.edu/~beg/. The University of California, San Diego is an equal opportunity employer.

University of Rochester
Two Postdoctoral Positions in the field of High energy density physics and laser-matter interactions

The University of Rochester (UR) is searching for an experimental and a theoretical Postdoctoral Research Associate in the areas of high energy density physics and high-intensity laser-matter interactions. The successful candidate will be part of the, newly funded, DOE/OFES Fusion Science Center (FSC). The multi-institutional Center is housed within the Depts. of Physics & Astronomy, Mechanical Engineering, and the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE). Its research is focused on the developing Fast Ignition and creating extreme states of matter. In the near term, UR’s experiments will use LLE’s ~1 ns, 60 beam, 30 kJ OMEGA and ~10 J, 1 ps MTW laser facilities to develop the techniques to create and diagnose extreme states of matter. Experiments will also be carried out on a variety of international facilities. PIC and Hybrid simulations will be carried on the new LLE 256-processor SGI parallel computer. In the future, the focus will be on experiments that integrate the OMEGA laser facility with the two-beam, 2.6 kJ, high energy petawatt OMEGA EP laser currently under construction at LLE, and expected to be completed in 2007. These experiments will provide stringent test of the Fast Ignition concept. More information about the Center and it’s research activities can be found at http://fsc.lle.rochester.edu or by contacting Prof. R. Betti at betti@lle.rochester.edu .

Experimentalists and theorists with experience in high energy density physics and laser-matter interactions are encouraged to apply. Please send electronic copies of your c.v., a letter describing research interests and the names of three references to Mrs. Margaret Kyle at mkyl@lle.rochester.edu and to Ms. Jill Morris at jmorris@me.rochester.edu .
